It has been said time and time again that microscopes are big investments. They do not come cheap. These contraptions are major purchases. You may be buying it through dealers or from a store but you must take the needed time to read up on the available models out there. Choosing from a wide variety of brands of microscopes, for the uninitiated, can be one cause of temporary insanity.
Ask yourself what you are looking for in a microscope. Most shoppers have ‘construction’ as their priority. They check how the contraption is made. The general rule is that one must not buy plastic articulating microscopes. You could – if it were a gift for a toddler. Plastic microscopes are poor quality articulating microscopes and they will only disappoint you. You will regret paying for that with your hard-earned cash.
Quality articulating microscopes come from the best brand. These brands are often made of alloy.
Meiji Techno
This is the number one manufacturer of articulating microscopes. It is a Japanese company. The clinical microscopes they manufacture are primarily used for student, industrial and clinical purposes. They are the top-selling brand for these applications. Aside from articulating microscopes, they have other kinds of microscopes including stereomicroscopes. They introduce new models every year.
American Optical
The articulating microscopes from American optical are popular for clinical and educational purposes. American Optical is the pioneer in the manufacturing of articulating microscopes. Their optic lenses are ingeniously designed to fit the nosepieces f the contraption. The arm, stage and the head are in fixed positions.
Carl Zeiss
It is a German brand that is popular for making articulating microscopes. Along with Leica, Olympus and Nikon, Carl Zeiss is one of the four full-line articulating microscopes out there in the market. They have facilities around the globe. Their articulating microscopes are high end even if they are made in Mexico and China. Zeiss continues to deal in the United Stages.
Nikon
It is one of the best articulating microscope manufacturers in Japan. The quality of their products has improved through out the years. They are considered to be world-class. Just steer clear of their older models. However, their new ones especially the Optiphot and Labophot are the best.
Olympus
This is another Japanese manufacturer of articulating microscopes. They are popular lately because of the good microscopes that are made in the Philippines but sell well in Asia and in the United States.
Articulating microscopes are binocular, meaning they have two-eyepieces. However, these microscopes are low-power and only have a magnification of 10x to 40x magnification, tops. The good thing about it is that it has a large stage which can be used to closely inspect the insects, plants and electronic pieces that are to be studies.
Slides are not included because the subject is placed directly on the stage. This is the appropriate microscopes choice for young children because it is very easy to use and to look through. It is simple to manipulate so this gives them a closer look of the specimen – as close as they like.
If you finally decided to get an articulating microscope, get one that has a beneficial light source. You’ll know if it has one because of the fluorescent lighting which is the results of the cool rays. This lighting does not dry the subject, as opposed to what the incandescent lights have the tendency to do.
If you constantly observe cells, bacteria, pond life and pollen, buy the basic kind of articulating microscope. Get the one that has a 40x objective. You can spare a few cash to get the scope that comes with 100x oil immersions.
For those who are new to the microscope lingo, here is a heads-up. The numbers mentioned above are the objective lenses. You will know that the figure is by checking the nosepiece of the articulating microscope. The higher it is, the closer the nosepiece is to the stage, therefore a better view of the subject placed on it.
Consider the following when buying an articulating microscope:
1. Get a scope that comes with a 100x oil immersion lens so you could just add another objective in order for you to have adjustment control. There are microscopes that have knobs but these are so course that they only work well with low power. If you want to get the best power view possible, then get those objective lenses that can give you the view you prefer.
2. Get an articulating microscope that has a mechanical stage. This mounts the contraption on the platform, making it easier for you to accurately adjust the slide. This is not really a required feature but it does give you the convenience to observe the subject at the highest magnification without adjusting the knob.
