This article is about the available procedure and treatment for brain tumor. From biopsy; the procedure of detecting a tumor, to types of surgery and advance treatment for brain tumor.
The surgeries described in this article are used in different stages of the treatment. More often one or more of these surgical procedures may be used to confirm if tumor is dangerous (known as a malignant tumor), surgery during treatment and post operative procedure to assure tumor will not reoccur. As listed in this article a surgery is required to diagnose the type of tumor by removing whole or piece of the tumor. Next removal of the whole tumor or remove as much as possible, this will possibly slow down the growth of the brain tumor and succeeding treatment, such as chemotherapy may be applied. If a tumor cannot be removed completely, surgery might be advised. Even if a small tumor is only removed this will still help in the treatment, as this will either be easier for radiotherapy or chemotherapy. It is easier to treat a smaller tumor than a bigger one. Depending on the stage and the type of the brain tumor will dictate the success of the operation.
Brain tumor surgeons/doctors are called neurosurgeons. During the operation the neurosurgeon will have a team at his side to help, assist and do other procedure. The team led by the neurosurgeon may have another neurosurgeon as a consultant. An Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist / surgeon may also be available.
In a complex surgery such as a brain removal tumor surgery the doctor will require the patient to undergo a CT scan or MRI scan. Both this can will help determine the exact location of the tumor. Either of this two scan will precede a biopsy. A biopsy will show exactly what type of brain tumor the patient has.
Craniotomy is next discussed in the article, which is the most common type of operation for a brain tumor. The procedure requires cutting out flap of bone from the skull which gives the surgeon an opening of the skull to the brain.
All microsurgery requires a high powered articulating microscope. This articulating microscope gives the surgeon the ability to take a closer look at the brain tissue during the operation. This allows the surgeon to precisely locate and operate a brain tumor with the use of high powered articulating microscope. An articulating microscope or a high powered microscope used in surgery usually has an articulating arm that allows easy positioning of the scope for easy observation. As all sophisticated microscope a high powered articulating microscope has video capability for recording purposes.
When a brain tumor blocks the normal circulation of fluid around the brain and spinal cord a shunt is needed to drain the fluid and relieve the pressure inside the head. Ultrasonic aspiration is the removal of tumor by breaking up using sound waves. Using sound waves breaks the tumor into small pieces then sucks the pieces as well. Neuroendoscopy a minimal invasive surgery uses an endoscope to probe through the brain. There are other available treatments for brain tumor and more are being discovered as technology progresses.
